English was my second language when I was a child.

When I was five years old, I arrived in England from Hong Kong, not knowing a word of English. On my first day at school, I looked out of place among long, blond haired girls in dresses as I wore Chinese pyjamas and had a pudding basin haircut. When I needed the bathroom, I was embarrassed and frustrated because no one understood me, and I was afraid.

In my 30s, I went out to India with a Christian community development group and had to learn the Indian language, Marathi. When I arrived in a small town and no one was there to pick me up, the fear of inadequacy rose in me again, as no one understood me and I understood no one.

I know what it is like to learn a language as a child and as an adult. I know what it is like to feel embarrassed, incompetent and inadequate, simply because my language wasn’t good enough.

But as a child, within three years I was getting higher grades than many of my classmates. I had learnt English to a near native level.

In India, I taught English to children and discovered that knowing English at a high level could open doors of career opportunity.

Later, after my husband and I moved to Canada, I worked with immigrants and refugees so that they could thrive in their communication and make the most of current and future opportunities. As I compared how adults and children learn, I discovered the best ways to fast track improving English communication skills.

One day, my husband, an engineer who has English is a second language, told me his boss had requested him to improve his English writing skills. I had recognised the consistent errors in his writing but it needed his boss to tell him before he was willing to make the improvements.

Through working with my husband and many other leaders, business executives and managers, I developed unique, customised speaking and writing solutions to get my clients the quickest possible results. In 2020, when Covid inspired an online revolution, I also began my own entrepreneurial journey to coach writing, speaking in meetings and presentaions to Asian and LatAm executives and managers, like you, who want to communicate effectively.

The reason I coach English communication to Asian and LatAm executives and managers is because too many are struggling to communicate clearly and effectively in English. They are spending too much time Googling vocabulary and grammar. They don’t have confidence that their English is correct or that their message communicates. And yet in today’s post-Covid world, they also know if they do not communicate clearly and competently in English they are limiting their career potential.
